White paper sets out plans for a shake-up of the UK water market

Industry news

Water for Life, the white paper published this morning by the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), lays out plans to:

  • deregulate water markets
  • increase competition for business customers
  • open up the sector for new entrants in the UK water market
  • encourage local organisations to improve water quality and make sure we are extracting water from our environment in the least harmful way.

Announcing the news, Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman said the aim was: “a more robust and prepared water industry, which promotes innovation and growth in the economy at the same time as we protect the environment".

The Government will publish a draft Water Bill in early 2012.  Click here to view the full white paper.
